Hello everyone!
We are Tadea, Mercedes, Martina, and Cristina, volunteers with Cooperating Volunteers in Senegal 2025 and during our time here, we've encountered a harsh reality—but also a real opportunity to change it.
In Senegal, thousands of children known as talibés are sent to daaras, Quranic schools run by marabouts. What should be a place of learning often becomes one of exploitation. These children can recite the Quran in Arabic, but they don’t know how to read, write, or count. They don’t understand French, the country’s official language.
They live in inhumane conditions—crammed together like sardines, with no hygiene, no medical care, often subjected to physical abuse, and forced to beg in the streets just to survive.
Many suffer from diseases like scabies, a skin infection that causes constant itching, open wounds, and intense pain. Seeing them scratching endlessly, without access to medicine or even a bar of soap, has deeply impacted us.
That’s why we’ve decided to take things a step further: we want to help build a safe and educational center for talibé children, in collaboration with Cooperating NGO.
This center will be more than just a shelter—it will be a space for learning, development, and hope.
Our goal is to give these children access to:

Vocational training in trades such as mechanics, sewing, and commerce.

Basic education so they can move forward.

Daily meals, clothing, showers, and medical care.

Emotional support and recreational activities in a safe, healthy environment.
With your help, we want to build this center from the ground up. Every contribution will help lay the foundation of a place where these children can grow—far from abuse and street life. A place where they can simply be… children.
